Cocktail bar on south bank Thames

The cocktail bar "The Horniman at Hays" in London is a traditional pub, known for its unique location on the south bank of the Thames and its historical significance. Named after Frederick Horniman, a famous tea merchant, the bar is situated on the site of a former tea warehouse that was part of the historic Hay's Wharf - once the largest and oldest wharf in the port of London. The building itself is part of Hays Galleria, a former 17th-century brewery that now offers an impressive ambiance with its grand staircase, marble counters, and antique wall clock. The interior is enriched with attractive wall friezes depicting Horniman's travels to Africa, India, and America, giving the space a touch of history and exoticism.

Historic pub culture in London

The drinks menu at Horniman at Hays is diverse and reflects the philosophy of the Nicholson's pub chain to which the bar belongs. The cocktail menu offers a selection of classics such as a refreshing Pimms or a spicy Espresso Martini, prepared with high-quality ingredients. They are particularly proud of the wide range of real ales, representing a long British brewing tradition, as well as an extensive selection of premium gins often served with handpicked botanicals. For wine lovers, there is a well-curated wine list that includes both British and international varieties, while beer enthusiasts will be delighted with a selection of draft beers like Nicholson's Pale Ale. Non-alcoholic options such as freshly brewed coffee or traditional tea are also available, making the bar attractive to various tastes.

Delicious British pub food

Culinarily, Horniman at Hays offers classic British pub fare with a modern twist. Highlights include the traditional Fish and Chips, where the fish is served in a crispy batter, as well as the juicy Steak and Ale Pie, which impresses with a rich sauce and fluffy pastry. The Sunday Roast is another favorite, served with slow-cooked meat, Yorkshire pudding, and seasonal vegetables, often praised as the perfect addition to a relaxed weekend. For those with a smaller appetite, there are sharing platters with a selection of snacks ideal for sharing over drinks, as well as lighter options like fresh salads. The dishes are prepared from fresh, preferably local ingredients, emphasizing a focus on quality.

Cocktail menu with quality ingredients

The atmosphere of the bar is versatile and adaptable. During the day, it invites guests to linger with its relaxed vibe and the opportunity to sit outside by the Thames - the outdoor terrace offers a spectacular view of the Tower Bridge and the HMS Belfast. In the evening, the pub transforms into a lively gathering place, especially when live sports broadcasts are playing on the screens or regulars gather at the bar. The interior combines rustic elements like exposed brick walls with modern accents, creating a welcoming and cozy atmosphere. Two private event spaces - the Wharfside Bar and the Mezzanine area - are available for celebrations such as birthdays or corporate events, offering space for larger groups with exclusive bar service.
